Lean & Green: Live Sustainably on a Budget

save-money-green-living.jpgThis is a very stressful, yet hopeful, time in our lives. Due to the economy, we are forced to make changes in what we buy for our family, but can we also choose what’s best for the planet? “Green” seems to cost more, it takes time to learn and implement, it requires that we focus and prioritize. It may not seem like the best time to go green and eat healthier, but this is actually the perfect time to get healthy, heal our environment, and save money!

Especially under times of stress, we need to keep our immune system strong to ward off disease. Disease costs money, so there is a real savings there (avoiding doctor bills, medicines, days off) but it’s deeper than that because without our health, we have nothing. Being healthier keeps us within our budget. Making changes that impact our health, in turn, helps heal our environment. And the truth is, choosing healthier options for our body and planet does NOT have to cost more; there are ways to save money while making good choices. We can tighten our belts and still eat delicious nutritious food that allow us to tighten our belts a notch as we get healthy and lose weight.

Support your body to do it’s job to keep you healthy by:

1. Eating well
2. Sleeping
3. Exercising
4. Being Optimistic
5. Loving
6. Using Safer products On & Around Your Body

Break the Baggy Habit

401_freshsnackpackpicnicclosed.jpgPlastic baggies…we know they’re convenient for packing lunches because, well, we’ve used them. I mean who hasn’t, right?  There’s just one problem…they aren’t recyclable. The end result is that every day of the 180 day school year, millions of plastic baggies are thrown away and will live on for hundreds of years in a landfill. But it doesn’t HAVE to be that way. There  are lots of reusable options available for packing waste-free lunches and one that we especially like are Fresh Snack Packs. I like them because you can see what’s inside them but equally awesome is the fact that they’re phthalates, PVC and BPA and lead free. Oh, and did I mention they’re reusable? Yeah, they are and we think they’re so groovy green that we’re giving away a couple sets of Fresh Snack Packs to one lucky winner!

Working Green

telecommuting1.gifTelecommuting. It’s a big buzzword these days but what does it actually mean? Well, in a nutshell, it means using the wonders of technology to work from home instead of getting in your car and driving to a workplace. It’s a bit of a departure from our usual fare but given the current job market, the cost of gas, and our love of all things eco-friendly we thought it would make for an interesting feature because telecommuting IS green.

Allow me to dazzle you with some factoids—according to the Consumer Electronics Association, a person telecommuting one day per week can reduce carbon emissions by 37-50 pounds per day. If that person telecommuted five days per week, the savings would be equivalent to the electricity consumed by an average household in 4 to 6 months. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, telecommuting can improve work/life balance, reduce stress (goodbye traffic!) and save you money on things like gas, wardrobe, dry cleaning, and buying lunch.

One excellent resource for finding telecommuting work is FlexJobs, an ethically-run service started by a green-centric mom who was frustrated with how difficult it was to locate real telecommuting opportunities among all the scams. FlexJobs finds and presents the best legitimate telecommuting opportunities (150-200 researched new job listings posted each week) in a well-designed, searchable web interface. Jobseekers pay a small monthly or yearly fee for access to the FlexJobs site but The Green Mom Review thinks telecommuting is so awesome that we’re giving way a one year subscription!
