Heaven Sent: The Oreck Halo

halo.jpgTake one long-haired cat, a bushy-tailed dog, and two active little boys, and what do you get? Well, in my house you get lots of fun times AND a very dirty family room carpet. I’m not one for using chemicals for cleaning anywhere in my home but I like a clean carpet (who doesn’t?!) so I was super excited to try out the new Oreck Halo Vacuum Cleaner. The Oreck Halo not only vacuums up dust and debris like typical vacuum cleaners, but actually kills microorganisms without the use of harsh chemicals thanks to the use of UV-C light technology. If you’re an allergy or asthma sufferer, this vacuum will hold special appeal in that it kills dust mites eggs (up to 90%), which can trigger allergies. Beyond just killing dust mite eggs this vacuum also kills a host of other microorganisms, such as flu viruses, e-coli, mold and salmonella. According to the company, the Oreck Halo’s UV-C light is even powerful enough to kill the superbug MRSA, the antibiotic-resistant bacteria that causes staph infections. Wow! Now for the performance of the vacuum itself… Prior to trying out the Oreck Halo, we had a high-end vacuum cleaner which retailed for more than $400 but I felt the Oreck had stronger suction, was easier to maneuver, and had a better all-floors function. In addition, the attachments were longer and more user-friendly to take out.  My assessment is that the Oreck Halo performs better than expected for vacuuming debris, PLUS it includes UV-C light technology for killing microorganisms. And considering that the floor in your home probably has more bacteria (much more) than your toilet seat, I’d say that the Oreck Halo is worth a look, especially if you are in the market for a high-end vacuum. Or you have a crawling baby. Or you just want your floors to be cleaner than your toilet seat :)

Little Stitches for Little Ones

28443665.JPG My newfound desire to learn how to sew has launched me on a mission to find projects that will inspire me to actually sew. Yes, you see for me, wanting to sew and actually finding the time to learn to sew (while looking after a toddler and a preschooler) are distinctly different things. All of which is to say that I must find projects that are 1) pretty easy to make and 2) SO insanely cute that I will actually squeeze the time in somehow to make them. Lucky for me, I have 20 new reasons to get out the sewing machine - all of which can be found in Amy Butler’s Little Stitches for Little Ones, an awesomely inspiring compilation of 20 sewing projects for baby and mom. From booties to baby bags, the projects in this book are so adorable you will be wishing you had 5 extra hours a day to try them out. Top on my must-make list? The baby kimono-style PJs. And after that, definitely the keepsake brag book (for the grandparents) and the cuddle kitty toy for my next baby shower gift. In addition to loving the precious, heirloom-worthy projects in this book, I also appreciate the fact that the book is spiral bound, which makes it easy to utilize, and that Amy has included a difficulty level (1-4) for each project. The other cool feature of this book is the fabric reference guide, which includes the name of each Amy Butler fabric used to create the pictured project. If you can’t tell already, I cannot wait to get started on a project from this book. Now, if I could just find a book to show me how to come up with those five extra hours a day…

Love in a Bottle

112.jpgSome women collect shoes. I collect stainless steel reusable water bottles. It’s true. As soon as I find a new line, I get super excited. No, it’s not as sexy as a new pair of Louboutins or Manolos but I love finding new and interesting reusable drinking bottles made of stainless steel - especially when they come with cool designs, like these from Otterbottle. Available in small (500 ml), medium (750 ml), and large (900 ml), these canteens are made of 100% 18/8 stainless steel inside and out, which means no BPA to worry about. The only downside? They’re not available for sale in the U.S. (yet), but the good news for our friends up North is that they are available in Canada. So Canadians, you’re in luck! We’ll try not to be jealous, and in the meantime, we’ll keep an eye out for these babies to be available in the States.

Bend-the-Rules Sewing

bendtherulessewing2.jpgMy new favorite hobby is sewing. Granted, I have yet to dust off the old Singer I bought ten years ago and never learned to use, but I just know it’s going to be my new favorite hobby. I have this itch to make something with my hands, something not purchased in a store, something of my own creation. My new beginner’s handbook is Bend-the-Rules Sewing. Written by the popular blogger and craft goddess, Amy Karol (known as Angry Chicken to her blog fans), Bend-the-Rules Sewing is the perfect book for the beginning seamstress. If you know absolutely nothing about sewing, this book would serve as a great primer. Read the first few pages and you’ll already know the sewing lingo and the exact supplies you need to get started. But what I love, love, love the most about this book are the incredibly hip projects. From cute handbags and aprons to cloth napkins and scalloped baby blankets, this book provides instructions for thirty projects with beautiful colorful pictures of each. Every time I flipped to a new page, I thought, “I want to make that!” and then I’d flip to the next page and think the same thing again! And really, what could be greener than making your own stuff, right? It’s sew true. Heh.

Bag Your Apples Green Mom Style

1medianl.jpgI’m pretty good about remembering to bring bags from home when I go grocery shopping, but when I get to the produce aisle I always feel really guilty reaching for the plastic produce bags. In fact, I really detest the plastic produce bags because I have to use so many of them, and because, well, they’re plastic! I mean, how can I bring a reusable tote to the grocery store and then fill them with plastic produce bags? It’s just not right! That’s all changed now that I have found these reusable produce bags by ECOBAGS. Made of cotton, they are machine washable and come in a variety of sizes with a drawstring closure. Get them in organic cotton or regular cotton, and then pair them with a few shopping totes for a totally guilt-free waste-free shopping experience.

Thinkbaby’s Got it Covered

thinkbaby.gifWith all the reports out there about the dangers of certain plastics, I’m liking stainless steel for feeding products more and more, mainly because I don’t have to worry about remembering which plastics are the safer ones and which ones are NOT. To that end, I’m really very excited that thinkbaby has come out with a complete BPA-free feeding set that includes a bento box, two bowls, and a mug which feature a stainless steel interior and a polypropylene exterior, plus two polypropylene utensils. Yeah, it only comes in one color (bright orange) and yeah it has “thinkbaby” stamped all over it instead of duckies or airplanes but seeing as I’m more concerned with safety than style, I really love it because it’s BPA-free, PVC-free, phthalate-free, lead-free and melamine-free. As an added green-mom bonus—the containers are great for making a waste-free lunches or carrying snacks on the go. Now that? Is some pretty smart thinking!

yhst-83333507685311_2036_4572280.jpgDrinking on the go just became the “funnest” activity for my son. But then again, how could drinking from a flip-top, stainless steel Spiderman canteen with a pop-up straw NOT be fun for a little kid? His eyes practically jumped out of his head with excitement when he saw it for the first time and he hasn’t let go of it since. *I* love the fact that it’s stainless steel inside and out and free of BPA, PVC and phthalates. Add to that the fact that it’s virtually spill-proof and super easy to clean and you’ve got a winner in my book. If Spiderman’s not your thing, you can get these FUNtainer Straw Bottles (with matching insulated and equally fun! food jars)  in a bunch of different styles for boys and girls, such as princess and Cars patterns. The straw bottles keep contents cold for 12 hours; the food jar keeps food cold for 7 hours or hot for 5 hours. Both will keep kids having fun for a long, long time.

Swaddled in Style

images1211.jpgCloth diapering has come a long way since the days of diaper pins and today’s mamas have it a quite a bit easier with all the various cloth diapering options - prefolds, all-in-ones, pocket, fitted… Personally, my favorite diaper covers are those that grow with your baby from birth to toddlerhood, like the new econappi from Swaddlebees. Because it comes with three sets of height-adjustment snaps on the outside, this diaper fits children from 8-35 lbs. That’s like three years of use out of one diaper! Made with hypoallergenic organic cotton velour on the inside (sooo soft!), the econappi can be used two ways - as a regular diaper cover with an absorbent organic cotton/hemp pad (included) on the inside or as a pocket diaper with the pad inserted in the pocket. Bottom line: this diaper is super soft, versatile, easy to use and comes in some really cute prints, like “pink lemonade” for girls and “blue summer” for boys. Those tired old bad-for-the-environment disposables ain’t got nothin’ on these babies when it comes to style!

Ecotronic is Eco-Fun

z1-eco-radiobg.jpgRemember when people listened to music on portable radios? Chances are that at some point in the future our kids will probably be googling “boom box” to figure out what the heck we’re talking about, and they’ll be shocked to see how big our radios were “way back then.” But regardless of how dorky we may seem to our kids in the future, we’ve got a great little boom box for them to play with today. The EcoRadio by Ecotronics is fun little toy radio for ages 12 months and up, which is powered without batteries. Each button produces a different sound or song and is impressively loud considering that it is powered without batteries (did I say that already?). As you can probably tell, I’m pretty excited about that last part…almost as excited as my kids are about their new toy. Speaking of which, my three-year-old just snatched it out of his baby brother’s hands and exclaimed, “This is neat!” I guess he can already appreciate the inherent coolness of eco-conscious retro toys. Or maybe he just thinks it’s really fun to play with. Either way, we’re happy happy all around.
