A Tree-Free Father’s Day

tree-free-journal.jpgEveryone has a story, yes? It is a journey of many thoughts and dreams, intermingled with the relationships that help us to grow, and keeping a journal, or diary is a great way to help keep our busy lives in perspective. Yes, even Dad. This is an eco-friendly daily journal that’s totally tree-free and made from 100% recycled cotton rags and remnants. Inside, the acid-free cotton paper is generously heavy and yet finely textured for his writing pleasure. It’s also considered a sustainably-made product because it uses enviro-friendly materials, is manufactured and transported responsibly, the packaging is produced using organic farming practices and a portion of the proceeds are donated. Now that? Is a truly green Father’s Day gift!

Want Not, Print Not

greenprint_logo.jpgSince joining The Green Mom Review, I have made a concerted effort to better my family’s recycling habits. Cutting back on unnecessary printing and paper waste? Not so much. Luckily, I’ve found GreenPrint, which was created as a tool to help households and businesses reduce the amount of paper waste. Why? According to their ecofacts, “In 2004 the United States used 8 million tons of office paper (3.2 billion reams). That’s the equivalent of 178 million trees!” How does it work? GreenView displays and highlights wasteful pages and page elements (like pages with just a URL, banner ad, logo, or legal jargon) and allows you choose to print only what you want. The software then removes images or text, creates a PDF file and has a reporting feature which keeps track of the number of pages and the amount of money you have saved. Once you know how much paper and money you’re saving, it’s kind of hard to imagine NOT using GreenPrint.

No More Plastic Hangers, EVERRR!

wheatware.jpgFirst there were wire hangers. Then came the plastic hangers. And now? We have wheat hangers. No, seriously. They’re called Wheatwear and they’re made mostly from wheat. Though they do contain a small percentage of plastic, the great thing about them is that they are biodegradable, compostable, and non-toxic. Now, we’re not recommending that you go throw out all your plastic hangers and replace them with these because that wouldn’t be very green, now would it? But if you do need to buy new hangers, you now have another option. And? They’ve got those coveted little notches to hold spaghetti strap tops and dresses, too, which is always nice for the ladies. Hangers have never been so exciting! Someone pinch me!

Got Trash? Leaves? Doggie Poop?

biobags.jpgWhen you’re hauling your trash to the curb, do you ever find yourself feeling lousy about sending yet another totally not-biodegradable-ever bag to the landfill? Yeah, me too. But now we don’t have to because BioBag has developed an alternative to the standard polyethylene/polypropylene plastic bags most of us use. You see, BioBag products are 100% biodegradable, compostible and “shelf stable.” This means you don’t have to worry that BioBags will start to break down before you use them or while you’re using them. In fact, they don’t actually decompose until they are introduced to the earth’s elements or micro-organisms in the soil. Oh, and for all you considerate poop scoopers out there, they make biodegradable dog waste bags, too, which means you no longer have to use those not-so-green plastic bags from the grocery store. Bow WOW!

Healthy Shmealthy

npa-777656.jpgGetting my kids to eat right isn’t easy and the battle usually starts over breakfast. Now that they’re getting older, I realize that sending them off to school on a sugar high may not be the best of compromises so this time I bought them something healthier. Guess what? They liked it even after I showed them the box. But you see, I knew that Nature’s Path organic cereals were great because I already enjoy their Flax Plus Granola and more recently the delicious Flax Plus Red Berry Crunch. Nature’s Path also offers a certified organic line of of kids’ breakfast products and they are committed to eco-friendly packaging for their products. Monday mornings are suddenly looking a whole lot better!

Hello Eco-Kitty

pet-ecology-perfect-litter.gifLiving in a multi-cat household, I was happy to learn that pet lovers like myself can now choose a biodegradable alternative in cat litter. Awarded “Best of the Best 2008″ by the SPCA, Pet Ecology Perfect Litter is up to 70% lighter than regular litter and has a unique enzyme-based system of destroying odors instead of using irritating chemical-based fragrances. Perfect Litter’s key ingredients (vermiculite and perlite) are used in hydroponic gardening and safe enough for use in flower beds. Unlike clay litter, it’s also totally flushable, sewer-friendly and dissolves without impact to plumbing. Additionally, Perfect Litter helps monitor your cat’s urinary tract health and offers an early warning system for FLUTD (a common and potentially fatal disease) by turning different shades of pink as a sign of possible infection. You can join their mail order program or start practicing perfect pet ecology in March, when the company starts selling Perfect Litter in major pet stores.
