I love your website, and have not visited in a long time. I stopped on by today, and was saddened at your featured item of the day-fruit in a pouch. Yes organic is important, but consider the waste that goes into a product such as the latest trend of packable kids food. I have a feeling the packaging on this product will outlive us all in a landfill somewhere. A green alternative? Make your own smashed organic fruit food, pack it in a small reusable container, and bring a spoon. It takes a minute more prep time, but saves us all in the end.
Oh I am so glad to have found your blog! Such great “green” information. Look forward to reading more of your posts!!
@Camille,
I agree wholeheartedly that packaged products are not ideal, however, you will note that I emphasized that these packages are an alternative for when fresh organic fruit is not available. Additionally, Ella’s is in the process of finding a recyclable alternative to their current packaging.
Unfortunately, there are very few products in the world that don’t have a footprint of some kind. Even reusable containers take resources to make them (particularly plastic) and most likely the majority will end up in a landfill, as well. That’s the sad reality of nearly all man-made products.
The fact that Ella’s is made of organic fruits and vegetables made me loosen my stance on the packaging because 1) it’s important to vote with our dollars and support organic farming and 2) it’s a much healthier choice than non-organic foods, particularly for babies and small children.
I’d rather have someone buy this kind of food organically than buying a similar product non-organically and thus, I feel like it’s worth mentioning as an option, despite the packaging.
Thank you for ringing in on this (I figured someone would). The more discussion we generate on these topics, the more people are thinking about them and that’s very important :)
