Disinfectant chemicals have a purpose and place, but should be used very sparingly as scientific studies have shown that disinfectant chemicals have been linked to chronic health issues like asthma, hormone imbalance, potential reduced fertility, and immune system problems.
What kind of disinfectant chemicals are we talking about? The kind we come in contact with everyday in household bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, triclosan in antibacterial soaps and other antibacterial products and nano-silvers found in antibacterial plastics, textiles, soaps and other materials.
Visit Women’s Voices for the Earth to learn more and then consider signing this petition to tell companies to replace toxic chemicals in their household cleaning products with safer alternatives AND disclose all of the ingredients that they use in household cleaning products on the product label.

I avoid toxic cleaning products a lot of the time by making my own: http://thenaturalistasblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Cleaning
Most disinfectants do NOT work. In order to kill the bug the counter surface must stay wet as it takes time for the active ingredient to burn through the cell membrane of the bug. Active ingredients like alcohol, ammonia, etc. evaporate before they kill the bugs. Most of the time we are just pushing the bugs around.
See the following link if you really want to see what the makers of “cleaning” products do. They are under no obligation to label the ingredients on air fresheners, laundry products. They routinely have carcinogenic volatile organic compounds in them. Follow this link to find out more. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080723134438.htm.

Not only is it good to go for clean natural disinfectants such as good old vinegar and water, it is safer as well. You don’t have to worry about your child drinking loads of chemicals. Most disinfectants contain cruel and acidic content that if even inhaled by kids could cause serious heart defects or disease.

Thank you for your information on the dangers of powerful disinfectants. Vinegar and water is safe and effective but hardly ever advertised as being a cleaning product, and rarely used with the exception of practicing environmentalists.Cleaning products are toxic and can cause everything from a severe rash to neurological damage. It also damages our oceans and our air. Thank you so much for your information and keep up the good work.
