Baby Cubes

babycubespackaged.jpgEvery now and then I come across a product that makes me wonder why I didn’t think of it first! Baby Cubes is one such example—it’s a freezer storage system for home-prepared baby food where each unit is stored and capped individually (total convenience anyone?). Made of non-toxic and recyclable polypropylene, they can be used for baby food, breast milk or anything else that requires airtight storage and they’re freezer, dishwasher and microwave safe. Best of all,  they’re BPA, phthalate and PVC-free. I don’t even have babies anymore and I’ve already thought of a dozen ways I could use these genius little cubes around my kitchen!

Jumping on the Bandwagon

It seems everyone else is blogging about the past year, so I was thinking about how we were living cheap and green in 2008.

I’m a big believer in baby steps and doing what you can. It would be great to be the perfect eco-family but let’s get real: it doesn’t work that way. But I do look back at seemingly small things I’ve done that have made an impact.

Probably one of the most noticeable has been our trash level. Months back I joined in on Enviromom’s One Can A Month Challenge. I never expected to lower our level to only one can, but we did! It also led me to investigate composting, and to be much more conscious of buying products with less packaging.

And the up side to the bad economy was that we became more conscious of our driving habits and energy usage.

We have almost stopped using paper towels thanks to our super absorbent kitchen towels (think sham-wow) and by sheer luck, our trash pick up started picking up recyclables #1-7.

Lunch Container Love

lunchboxcombo.jpgIf you’re a regular reader, you’re probably well familiar with our preference for non-toxic lunchboxes and BPA-free food containers because, well, we just don’t like mixing hazardous chemicals and endocrine disruptors with our food. That’s why we’re huge fans of Healthy Kitchenware, a site that specializes in non-toxic food and drink containers. One of their latest offerings is a stainless steel lunch carrier that comes with a smaller container that is perfect for salad/dressing or anything else that you would normally pack in a standard plastic container or baggie. Because it’s safe stainless steel, no chemicals will leach into your food and the polypropylene lid is a food-safe plastic. Of course, I think it’s awesome but even my tween daughter thinks it’s cool enough to bring to school in her lunchbox and that’s saying a lot!
