While it would be ideal to have all the foods we eat be organic, we know that’s not always possible. Oftentimes, budgets dictate that we cannot buy everything in organic form and sometimes, certain organic foods simply aren’t available. That said, The Daily Green ran a helpful piece today on the foods for which buying organic isn’t critical because their pesticide loads are among the lowest. Hopefully this will ease your mind a bit when you’re shopping for produce!
Here’s the list:
Asparagus
Avocados
Bananas
Broccoli
Mango
Kiwi
Cabbage

i have seen this before, and health-wise it makes sense. environmentally? no pesticides are better than low pesticides :)
I read that bananas are highly sprayed with pesticides esp. those grown in developing nations where the pesticides are stronger. I personally like to buy the fair trade organic bananas regardless because of the horrible child labor in some banana producing countries.
@ Sarah,
Yes, I agree and personally, I try to avoid any produce grown outside the US, whether it’s organic or not.
I think that the most important thing to remember is that if a food has a skin that you take off before eating it offers you a safer alternative. Understand that the plants that the fruits or veges come from are sprayed with the chemicals so no harvest is safe from all pesticides unless it comes from unsprayed land with unsprayed plants with all natural water and with no exposure to harmful O2. So realistically…get what you can and feel good about it because anything is better than nothing!
